Krasno Sparkling Rebula Slovenia
In the Brda area of western Slovenia, grapes have been cultivated since 300 BCE, though expansion of viticulture in the area happened after the Roman invasion the the first century ACE. The producers of this wine, Klet Brda have only been around since 1957, but the grape, Rebula (also known as Ribolla Gialla in Italy) can be traced back to the 14th century. Klet Brda is cooperative of winegrowing families who collectively own the brand. They farm with care for the land, the people, and the biodiversity of the area. This sparkling wine has a deep golden hue and is rich and round in the mouth. Notes of baked apples shine through. This is lovely on its own or paired with light snacks or appetizers.
Domaine des Loges Sauvignon Blanc France
Located just south of the Loire River and just inland from the Atlantic, Domaine des Loges is run by the fourth generation of the family. The brothers took over in 2013, and they aim to farm sustainably, such as using cover crops as natural fertilizer, while trying out innovative winemaking techniques. Their wines are excellent values and varietally correct. This Sauvignon Blanc is a great introduction to what the Loire Valley has to offer. It's crisp and light with notes of citrus and tropical fruits. The mouthfeel is round enough to make it interesting, but the acidity lifts the wine. Great with cheeses, fish, or poultry.
Aslina Chardonnay South Africa
Aslina's founder and winemaker, Ntsiki Biyela, grew up in rural South Africa, and after getting her BSc in Agriculture and working at various wineries, she created her own brand, named for her beloved grandmother. Her experience in French vineyards informs her style, though her wines are beautifully and distinctly South African in character. This Chardonnay is robust without being too big. Notes of tropical fruit dance with lime zest. Partially aged in oak, there are very light notes of vanilla. This goes well with heavier dishes, poultry, lobster or roasted vegetables.
Comahue Pinot Noir Argentina
Hundreds of miles south of Mendoza, Argentina's better-known wine country, lies the Patagonian Steppe, where the the Viola family pioneered viticulture in an unlikely landscape. In their modern winery set right into the low hills, they make wine from organically farmed grapes, carefully grown and processed with the utmost care for the land and resources. This Pinot Noir is light bodied, with notes of red fruits and mild hints of spice and vanilla. The mouthfeel is very soft. This is excellent on its own, but pairs well with poultry, mushroom dishes, and mild cheeses.
Jean Jacques Cabernet Sauvignon NEW California
From Michel-Schlumberger, this is part of their more casual line of wines, named after the founder of the winery. The estate has Swiss roots, the winemaker is from Alsace, and the result of those influences isn't an obnoxiously bold Cali wine, but one that is more reserved in body and texture. If you thought you were off west coast wines, this one will change your mind. It has all the fruit tones you expect from a Cab, but it sits a little lighter on the palate than you might expect if you're used to a riper, plusher style. This will pair well with both red and white meat, fungi, and cheeses.
Ultraviolet Old Vine Zinfandel NEW California
A new wine from Samantha Sheehan, who created Ultraviolet to be affordable and accessible, well made with little intervention, and most importantly, delicious. The organically grown fruit is sourced from Mendocino in the north of the state, and with Sheehan's old-world winemaking style, the result is a wine that's not overripe or oversaturated. Dark red fruit notes drive the profile, with subtle floral and herbaceous undertones. Serve with red meats, tomato-based dishes, strong cheeses, boldly flavored mushroom or vegetable dishes.
